Abraham Lincolns Assassination Essay

The destruction of a legacy In the year 1810, Abraham Lincoln was the man who had eyes for the future. He had remarkable hopes, dreams and goals he wished to accomplish for his country. He was a member of the union and was working towards freeing the slaves, and crushing the confederacy. Most of the country supported him and his goals. Yet there were still a few states that supported slavery and wanted Lincoln dead. Confederates were worries that Lincoln would take away their rights. However the confederates did not see that Lincoln was made for greatness. Unfortunately, his life was cut short by: John Wilkes Booth, Abraham Lincoln’s assassin. On April 14, 1865, John Wilkes Booth became the first person to assassinate an American president when he shot and killed Abraham Lincoln in his box at Ford’s Theater in Washington (Kauffman). John Wilkes Booth was a supporter of the confederacy. He was convinced Lincoln was going to destroy the constitution. So out of frustration, anger and delusion he begu n to plot his plan to assassinate president Lincoln. Booth had several failed attempts on Lincolns’ life. Luckily enough for Booth, Lincoln planed to see the play: My American Cousin, at Fords Theater. Because Booth was an actor he knew the details and the schedule to My American Cousin. Wilkes was able to go in to Lincoln’s booth and time the shot perfectly with the music from the play so that people attending the play would not notice. â€Å"From a distance of about four feet behind Lincoln, Booth fired a bullet into the President’s brain. Major Rathbone sprang up to grab the assassin, but Booth wrested himself away after slashing the major with a large knife. Booth rushed to the front of the box and Booth leapt over the railing, where he fractured the fibula in his left leg. Rising from the stage, Booth shouted, â€Å"Sic semper tyrannus!† and ran across the stage and fled from the back of the theatre† (Bogar). Many say that Wilkes did not work alone and some say he did, unfortunately that will never be known. â€Å"While many people assumed tha t  hidden forces were behind the assassination, others speculated that Booth had acted on his own. The reason: he wanted to immortalize himself† (Kauffman). Although back in that time period, people would often forget to check and examine every speculation of evidence, or not even have the means to investigate said evidence, so things would go overlooked. Such as John Wilkes Booth just being a small pawn in the larger scheme of Abraham Lincolns’ assassination. John Wilkes Booths’ assassination of Lincoln is said to be part of a whole conspiracy theory. When Booth began formulating a plan for Lincolns’ assassination, he recruited friends for his operation. Booth and his fellow conspirators met to plan their assassination on the president. They originally planned to abduct the president and hold him for ransom, however things did not go as planned. â€Å"When Richmond fell, the plans turned to assassination. First, there was the failed effort to blow up the White House, followed by the successful effort to kill Lincoln at the theater†(Steers). Wilkes heard the president would be attending the play My American Co usin, so Wilkes jumped on that opportunity and made a plan with his conspirators. Unlike Booth, his conspirators did not exactly support the idea of abducting the president during the play so they decided to terminate the plan. Nevertheless Wilkes when A-wall and decided to move forward with the plan, with the result being successful. â€Å"The idea that Lincoln was killed as part of a grand conspiracy of Confederates arose almost immediately after the assassination† (Steers). Confederates wanted Lincoln dead for the hope for the confederacy rising. â€Å"Lincoln was viewed as a legitimate wartime target† (Steers). Part of the theory of reason for Lincolns’ assassination are linked to the Unions failed raid on Richmond. This raid was viewed as incriminating evidence of Lincolns’ determination and will to end the war. Ending the war was what the confederacy was afraid of. The confederacy wanted to be rid of Lincoln so they could not have to conform and agree to Lincoln’s new ideas and upcoming laws. To prevent Lincoln’s ideas from becoming actions, the confederacy took matters in their own hands. Lincoln’s assassination was the end of a legacy. He died to youn g and to soon. Abraham Lincoln was betrayed by his country, being left for dead with out any peace but only the hope of his ideas and goals to be carried out my upcoming successors. His assassination was unfair and uncalled for. His country went behind his back and plotted his death because  some people were too ignorant and arrogant to see Lincolns full potential and what Lincoln could have provided for America. Who knows what Lincoln would have accomplished if his death wasn’t so early.

Analysis Of Martin Luther King And Black Lives Matter

While in Birmingham City Jail, Martin Luther King wrote a letter in response to some fellow priests who felt that his actions were â€Å"unwise and untimely† (King). Throughout this letter his long road of struggle to racial freedom and the actions and words that are fueling the fight are outlined. In his letter, Martin Luther King claimed, â€Å"the goal of America is freedom†. Written into the Declaration of Independence is the idea that all men are created equal, but many feel robbed of their freedom. Movements such as Martin Luther King’s fight for civil rights and the recent Black Lives Matter campaign show us that America does not treat everyone freely. Martin Luther King and Black Lives Matter take different approaches towards the same†¦show more content†¦the focus of Black Lives Matter is being articulated less as a demand for specific civil or political rights, and more as a broader claim for â€Å"black humanity.† Martin Luther King al so used the language of human rights to internationalize the issue of racial inequality in the United States. BLM movement is following in king’s footsteps, taking a stance and demanding action. Both movements fight for freedom but in ways that seem to be opposite of the other, one in love, and one in hate. King uses a â€Å"peace and love† style of protest. The letter which king wrote (King) defends his strategy to a nonviolent resistance to racism. He answers the forces of hatred with nonviolent resistance in the pursuit of what he called the beloved community. (Kasson). He also insisted that nonviolent direct resistance was not a surrender but a â€Å"spiritually strenuous confrontation of injustice and oppression†. In this process, however, protesters aimed not to defeat or humiliate their opponents, but to win their friendship and understanding. As King tirelessly insisted, The end is redemption and reconciliation. Additionally, one in 33 women admitted to binge drinking during pregnancy (CDC, 2015). Consummation of alcohol during pregnancy is one of the leading causes for developmental disabilities. The term fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) is being increasingly used to refer to the full range of problems caused by prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) (Paley O’Connor, 2009). As a result of PAE many developmental deficits are manifested. According to Paley and O’Connor (2009), extensive research has shown that these can include â€Å"intellectual and learning disabilities, deficits in executive functioning, memory problems, speech and language delays, inattention, hyperactivity†¦behavior problems, and social impairments† (p. 258). While this disorder manifests a host of symptoms, there is no known cure and no standard of treatment (CDC, 2015). It is critical that we identify methods of treating FASD because even mothers with the best intentions may consume alcohol before they know they are pregnant. If you were able to imprison a decrepit, senile old man in your backyard and make a large sum of money just to keep him, would you do it? The classic short story â€Å"A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings† by Gabriel Marquez does just that, only this old man has wings. While exploring human nature and the reactions a person and people have to adversity and difference, Marquez makes some pointed criticisms of society in general. With many underlying themes and symbols, I’ll be analyzing a few such as; greed, compassion, the magical realism genre and the subtle jabs at Catholicism Marquez makes throughout the story. Money Although not the initial motivation for imprisoning the old man, the discovery of the mass pilgrimage to their home encourages Pelayo and Elisenda to charge admission to see the â€Å"Angel†. The desperate see him as a cure to their ailments, and are simple-minded enough to pay handsomely to visit him, a narrative on the fool hearty nature of group thinking. After a short time of being their star attraction, Pelayo has made enough to quit his job and build a mansion while Elisenda can afford the latest fashion she’s always wanted. There’s so much greed involved in keeping someone locked up in their chicken coop, but it’s seemingly nonexistent to any of the characters, including the Priest and the church. Five train stations Essay Five train stations had passed with people leaving the train and new faces entering the carriage, and finally the train pulled up at my destination. I stepped out of the carriage and had to leap across the huge gap that was between the carriage and the platform. As I did this I noticed something rather strange, I was the only person to exit the train at that particular station, whereas dozens of people were getting off of the train at the other stops. As I walked out of the station I finally realised why I was the only person to get off at that stop. It was slap bang in the middle of nowhere to be precise. I looked to the left of the station to see the place where I would be slave labouring for two weeks. I took another look around to see that apart from that there was a run down chip shop across the road but that was it. There were no shops, houses or anything. I was thinking to myself the options that I had during my lunch break. The rundown fish and chip shop looked to be my only option, however there was a slight problem. The road that I had to cross to get to the chip shop was a dual carriageway and there was no pelican or zebra crossing in sight. How on Earth I was supposed to get across the road at lunchtime was beyond me. After pondering on what to do on my lunch hour I walked in to a sky blue building, along a corridor and into reception. A rather attractive young woman in her early twenties approached me and asked if she could help me. I replied by telling her that I had work experience starting on that day. I then proceeded to follow her on her instruction and she lead me into a large garage, which unsurprisingly contained many cars, and introduced me to a man named Brian Wells. The receptionist then left us and went back to her duties. Brian and myself began talking about my working hours and the tasks I would be carrying out. He then showed me the grand tour and pointed out the tearoom. In my head I knew that it was a hint. He really meant that this would be my home for the next two weeks. As soon as I had a brief look around the garage I knew that I was going to have a dreadful two weeks. Brian then told me that I would be working with a mechanic called David Beams. Brian shouted out at the top of his cockney voice, Beamsy! I was rather startled by this, as it was very unexpected. After he had called out an old man who appeared to be Harold Shipmans twin brother strolled along the dirty, oil covered workshop floor wearing red and silver Vauxhall overalls. The Harold Shipman look-alike approached me and introduced himself as David Beams. While he was doing this I couldnt help but think to myself how unlucky I was. My work experience placement was in a shabby old garage in the middle of nowhere. I also had the pleasure of working with a serial killer. The two weeks passed dreadfully slowly and the tasks I undertook were making tea, making coffee, making hot-chocolate and running to and fro across a dual carriage way to the run down chip shop with everybodys orders. Tired bored and annoyed with Mr Austin for giving me a terrible work experience placement, I was just about to leave for the last time when the mechanics came up to me and told me to never forget them and to visit them regularly. I smiled and said thank you for letting me work with them. While doing this in my head I was thinking that they have a snowballs chance in hell of seeing me again. I couldnt wait to leave the garage. Work experience was possibly the worst two weeks of my life that have ever happened and probably yet to come. After the first hour of work experience I definitely decided that I would never like a job that involves manual labour. I wouldnt have the patience and I hated every minute of work experience.
